About Maui Sea School
Ocean-based swim lessons for children on Maui, held at Baby Beach, Sprecklesville.
Maui Sea School offers private one-on-one swim lessons that take place in the ocean, where children can build a real relationship with the water from the very beginning.
The ocean offers a dynamic, ever-changing environment where children learn to move with the water rather than against it. By experiencing waves, currents, and the natural rhythm of the sea, they develop awareness, adaptability, and a deeper sense of confidence that extends beyond the pool.
About the Instructor
Aloha! My name is Kaloa, and I created Maui Sea School to share my love of the water and help children understand that the ocean is an extension of home—a place where they can find comfort and joy.
As a swim instructor, I’ve seen firsthand how being in the water can transform children. Beyond strokes and floating, they learn their capacity to overcome fear, embody courage, and grow into who they are. Learning to swim becomes more than a skill—it becomes something they carry with them into other parts of life.
Here on Maui, I wanted to create something more personal. Lessons that go beyond the pool and into the ocean itself.
With a gentle, intuitive approach, my role is to act as a guide between each child and the sea—helping them build respect for the water, find confidence, and develop skills that will stay with them for a lifetime.
It is my pleasure to share the love I hold for the sea, woven into my teachings, and I am grateful to share this experience with each family who comes my way!
Our Approach
We teach swimming through a gentle approach. Each child is met exactly where they are. Some arrive excited, some unsure—but all are guided at their own pace, with patience and care.
Lessons focus on:
Feeling safe and relaxed in the water
Building comfort with submersion and breath
Learning to float, balance, and move independently
Developing awareness in an ocean environment
Learning strokes like front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
Beyond skills, children begin to recognize their ability to move through fear, build confidence, and grow into themselves in the water.
Why the Ocean
The ocean is alive, ever-changing, and powerful. It can feel intimidating at first, but with the right guidance, it becomes quite calming, grounding, and even joyful. Baby Beach is a calm, shallow, and protected stretch of shoreline, which makes it a great place for children to build trust and understanding of how the ocean works.
Learning in the ocean allows children to:
Build real-world water awareness
Feel how the water moves and respond to it
Develop confidence in an ever-changing environment
Create a respectful relationship with the natural world
Over time, the ocean becomes a place they feel welcomed and held, not something they fear.
From cautious to adventurous, we meet each child where they are, without pressure.
